Memphis City Schools Provide Second Chance for At-Risk Youth with Course Recovery Program

"Statistics show that students two or more years over grade level have a high propensity (over 70 percent) of dropping out of school... The state of Tennessee, and MCS in particular, decided that we needed to seriously look at what we offer these at-risk students to help them graduate from our education system," said Ron Pope, director of student engagement, Memphis City Schools. "Many students just couldn't succeed through the mainstream program, and we felt it was our responsibility to offer options such as alternative learning, technology, and distance learning. So, we decided to offer the Secondary Course Recovery Program starting in 2004."

Greetings from Nettie, your PLATO Pathfinder to the Internet!

2008 New Year's Resolutions

February brings to mind Groundhog Day and a hope that winter will soon be over. Legend decrees that if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow on February 2nd, six more weeks of winter weather will befall the world. No shadow and the delights of an early spring will soon arrive. This year, Phil declared, "As I look around me, a bright sky I see, and a shadow beside me. Six more weeks of winter it will be!" That means plenty of time to polish our math skills.

While Phil looks for his shadow to make a prediction, this month I am happy to provide lesson suggestions that relate to lessons in probability—a more accurate method of making mathematical predictions. Maybe your students could get so good at probability they could be prepared to predict how long winter will last next year!

Look below for online lessons that will help your students further understand probability. Plus, you will also find additional PLATO® lessons for additional math practice.

Grades K–2
